It can be challenging to occupy a space temporarily and create a sense of home. Even more challenging to return home and realise that your old space no longer ‘fits’. Harnessing the energy of homecoming can facilitate growth, experimentation and expansion.
After seven months away from home, I realise that I have taken where I live somewhat for granted. Yet is is one of the few remaining habitats for the endangered Buruwagan (bush curlew) whose distinctive night call is becoming my own call to action.
Home is a bag, a backpack, a book, a man, a family, a dog or two. It’s many things to many people, but as I have journeyed over the years, my needs are becoming simpler. Home is a a crackling fire, or the sound of waves at the beach. Shelter, birds singing and family.
Backyard beekeeping and bee hives featured as a recurring motif in my early art works. Taking possession of new bee hives is a circuitous route back to exploring what home means in the light of the year 2020.
